LIVE POSITIVELY BOOKS FOR COCA-COLA
PROJECT MANAGER, SENIOR DESIGNER AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH
How to Design a Sustainable book considering all the steps in the process?
In 2009 The Coca-Cola Company Latin America approached Suhab with the idea of making a year-end report for the Live Positively campaign in the most sustainable way possible. Through our research we found that one of the most common forms of waste inside their production facilities are the cardboard boxes used to distribute some of their products. Considering that, we started prototyping using that material as the structure of the book. After various iterations combining materials and manufacturing processes we presented the final product -- a good looking book produced with some of their own cardboard waste printed with soy ink over 100% recycled paper made out of post-consumed Tetra Pak carton packages. The book was covered with handcrafted paper made with natural fibers (grass, banana and corn) or cotton fabrics. The books were fully hand made in collaboration with small workshops throughout the city empowering a group of small businesses. Suhab was also in charge of the editorial and communication design.
Since 2009 to date the books have been printed in three different languages (English, Portuguese and Spanish) and distributed in more than 5 countries.
